Lanesboro’s Comprehensive Plan Update: A Focus on Housing and Community Growth

The City of Lanesboro is undertaking a significant update to its comprehensive plan, with a primary focus on addressing the community’s housing needs. This initiative aims to balance the town’s thriving tourism industry with the necessity of providing affordable housing for residents.

Community Engagement and Planning

Since early 2025, city officials have actively engaged with residents through surveys, focus groups, and public meetings to gather input on various community concerns. A prominent issue that emerged is the need for affordable housing, as Lanesboro’s population continues to grow at an annual rate of 1.98%.

City Administrator Mitchell Walbridge emphasized the importance of this balance, stating, “In this plan, the city council and the steering committee of this project have had in mind finding that balance between playing off of our key tourism industry, but also kind of bolstering the livability of Lanesboro for local residents.”

Key Components of the Draft Plan

The new 60-page draft plan encompasses a wide range of topics, including land use, development, and economic activity. However, the emphasis on housing reflects the community’s desire to ensure that growth does not compromise the quality of life for its residents.

By updating the comprehensive plan, Lanesboro aims to create a sustainable framework that supports both its economic vitality and the well-being of its community members.
