Lanesboro’s Legion Lights: A Community Triumph

In a remarkable display of community spirit, Lanesboro’s Sylvan Park has been transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland, thanks to the grassroots initiative known as the Legion Lights. This project, led by local volunteers in collaboration with the city and the Henry M. Guttormson Post #40 American Legion, has not only brought joy to residents but also attracted visitors, boosting local tourism during the off-season.

The idea originated when City Council Member Kathryn Wade envisioned enhancing the park’s festive decorations beyond the traditional gazebo lights. She collaborated with residents Anne Happel and Kara Maloney, executive director of Lanesboro Arts, to bring this vision to life. The trio spearheaded fundraising efforts, setting an initial goal of $10,000. Remarkably, the community’s generosity surpassed expectations, raising approximately $33,000 through over 100 cash and in-kind donations. Contributions ranged from small individual donations to larger sponsorships from local businesses and organizations.

The funds were utilized to purchase and install an array of holiday lights and decorations, creating a captivating display that has become a focal point for community gatherings and celebrations. The Legion Lights project has not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of Sylvan Park but also fostered a sense of unity and pride among residents.

In recognition of this outstanding community effort, the City of Lanesboro was honored with the League of Minnesota Cities’ 2025 City of Excellence Award in the under 5,000 population category. This accolade underscores the project’s success in bringing people together and sparking local pride.

The Legion Lights serve as a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision. As the lights continue to brighten Sylvan Park each winter, they stand as a testament to Lanesboro’s vibrant community spirit and commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all its residents.
